ASEAN Special Envoy: Approach to Myanmar Solution Needs Tolerance and Pragmatism

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia and the ASEAN Special Envoy, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, said that the most complicated issue regarding the crisis in Myanmar is that there are many states that require an approach of great patience and pragmatism.

Speaking at a press conference after the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Thursday afternoon, DPM Prak Sokhonn said he plans to make his first official visit to Myanmar to meet with all parties involved in the country's ongoing conflict in mid-March 2022. He added that he has upcoming meetings with a number of stakeholders, including a meeting with all the ASEAN Ambassadors in Yangon.

He said, “There will be a meeting with all the ASEAN ambassadors in Yangon, because the people there know the situation, they can have suggestions on how we can properly assess the situation and know the demands of each party."

He continued, “As the ASEAN Special Envoy, I see what can be achieved in this year from the five points of the ASEAN consensus.”
